Health Under Mitt

Mitt Romney claims that the first thing he will do if elected president is to repeal the Affordable Care Act, a.k.a. Obamacare.

Let’s take a look at what that means for consumers if that comes to pass. Repealing the ACA will:

Take away the provision mandating well-woman visits, breastfeeding support, domestic violence counseling and support, and contraception without co-pays or deductibles. That will immediate affect millions of women who cannot otherwise afford preventive care.

Deny some 85 million Americans other co-pay and deductible-free preventive services like vaccinations, diabetes testing, cancer screenings, and flu shots.

Allow insurance companies once again to refuse or limit coverage of children with pre-existing conditions Protections that cover all Americans starting in 2014 will never be enacted.

Dismantle the provision allowing young people up to age 26 to be covered under their parents’ health plans.

Again allow insurance companies to place lifetime limits on coverage, meaning someone with a long term, serious illness like cancer can quickly go bankrupt.

Permit insurance companies to go back to the practice of arbitrarily dropping coverage of people who get seriously ill and “cost too much.” Additionally, the provision ensuring that insurers justify excessive rate hikes or spend the majority of their premiums on actual care, not management or administrative costs will be voided.

Turn Medicare into a voucher system, forcing seniors to navigate the complex insurance market on their own. It also means eliminating no-cost preventive care and do away with the safeguards for beneficiaries that are in the “donut hole,” including a 50 percent discount on brand name drugs.

Deny millions of people ready access to health by withdrawing funds to States to cover them under Medicaid, eliminate financial help for employers to cover early retirees prior to Medicare eligibility – forcing another group of Americans to pay all of their own premiums in the individual market and watch their savings rapidly dissolve.

Under a “President Romney” funding for the Prevention and Public Health Fund which invests in wellness programs such as smoking cessation, weight management, and chronic disease management will be eliminated.

Construction and expansion of community health centers which do or will serve 20 million people will be halted.

The Community First Choice Option, which allows states to offer home and community based services to the disabled rather than putting them in institutions will disappear.

HHS Efforts to combat combat health disparities will stop.

Planned additional funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) will be cut.

And, it will do away with Health Insurance Exchanges, leaving millions of people adrift and unable to purchase affordable health instance if their employer does not provide it.

And that’s just the beginning.

This is who 45 percent of voters want to be our next president.
